The ViewLeeds Review
Woodies Ale House is the typical good-all-round local pub and it marks the starting point for the Otley Run.
The Venue
Woodies looks like an old-fashioned pub, and this is a stark contrast to other pubs in the vicinity which seem to have been overwhelmed by a more youthful clientele.
Walking in from the street into the Tudor-clad pub, with the wooden barrel hanging over the entrance door, there's quite a distinctive feel in the tap room, with an extending bar allowing for more seating space, possibly at the expense of the original look.
Smokers will be able to enjoy their pint and a fag in the beer garden at the back of the building. It's partially covered by a canopy, and scattered with heat lamps.
The People
Unlike many bars in the area, Woodies Ale House seems to enjoy its very own loyal fan club, but without the ‘are you local?’ factor. It's relatively undiscovered by students so the pub manages to maintain its unique, old-fashioned feel.
However, it's the first stop on the Otley run (Leeds' student bar crawl) so if you walk in on the wrong night you may think you've stumbled into a student pub.
This is also a good sports pub as there are numerous screens (there's even one in the beer garden), and it gets busy with sport-mad men during the big match days.
The Food and Drink
A down-to-earth and unpretentious menu with good quality food is on offer which, in favour of its regular customers, remains good value for money.
If real ales are your thing then Woodies Ale House, which has a variety on offer, is quite simply the only place for you in Headingley.
The Last Word
Woodies Ale House has something for everyone, but if you're after excitement then don't spend all night here.
