The ViewLeeds Review
The most authentic Thai food you’ll find in Leeds, Sukhothai is the place to dine for those with a discerning palate for Thai cuisine and a passion for The Land of Smiles.
The Venue
Set away from the main student area, Sukhothai sits comfortably in the more leafy parade of shops in Headingley, neighbouring up with Italian favourite, Salvos.
Although not the prettiest building from the outside, inside the decor is typically Thai. Filled with dark wood carvings and peacefully poised buddhas, special care has been taken not to over do it and turn Sukhothai into something themed or contrived.
The Atmosphere
The clientele is mixed, from students dining with their parents to business lunches to regulars dining on their own.
The atmosphere is pleasant without being too raucous or too quiet, as is sometimes the case with Asian restaurants. The service is impeccable and always delivered with an air of unobtrusive elegance and warmth.
The Food
The food is something else. Authentic, spicy Thai dishes you expect to buy on the streets of Bangkok, only this time served on clean white plates with wonderfully embellished decoration.
Starters and mains are both ample in proportion but they don't leave you feeling overly stuffed. All the favourites are available, such as red and green curries (£7.95).
More adventurous dishes include mussels steamed in a clay pot with sweet basil, chilli and lemongrass (£9.50), all delicious. The range of seafood and fish dishes at Sukhothai is highly commendable.
Desserts are typically Thai with most dishes centred around fried bananas, ice cream and exotic fruits. The banana crepe is a real winner for those with a sweet tooth (£3.50).
Set menus are varied and a great idea for those a little apprehensive about what to choose. The set menu at lunch is especially good value at £8.95 for two courses with quality and size not compromised.
The Drink
The drinks are of average cost, the highlight being authentic Thai beers, the perfect tipple to complement the spicy cuisine. Beer Chang and Singha Beer are both £2.75 for a bottle.
The Last Word
Great food, great staff make Sukhothai a faultless Thai dining experience, and it's refreshingly cheap.
