The ViewLeeds Review
This glass-fronted ‘super-club’ is relatively new on the Leeds scene, and it seems to have something to offer everyone. With an emphasis on variety, and with seven themed venues and two nightclubs, you're guaranteed a great night at Oceana.
The Venue
Walking in from the street, the club is imposing and grand in design, and ever so vast. All the bars are linked by a figure of 8 hallway, and each has its own vibe and identity. This leads to some interesting juxtapositions; the Aspen Ski lodge bar, which is kitted out with a moose’s head and ‘old man’ armchairs, sits next to Wakyama Tokyo, which has space-age clean lines and a chrome-finish bar.
Those in search of a decadent night-out should head to one of the four VIP rooms (brilliant for private parties). Another noteworthy feature is the balcony off the side of Aspen Ski Lodge which serves as a popular smoking hangout.
Other highlights include the New York Disco, which is pure disco indulgence, and the Parisian Boudoir, which would get anyone in the mood.
The People
Oceana has a very young and carefree vibe, and many of the revellers are students who are taking advantage of the discount drinks on special-offer nights.
Clubs of this scale tend to lack the exclusivity that more intimate haunts possess, and with offers on entry fees it seems most of Leeds heads here when the pubs kick-out.
The Music
The club offers a variety that no other Leeds venue can top. With R'n'B, seventies and eighties disco, nineties classics, contemporary chic, commercial dance, club classics, funky dance, acoustic and indie, Oceana really does have all tastes catered for and normally all at the same time on the same night.
The Drink
The drinks are what you'd expect at any super-club; simple and mass produced. Emphasis is placed on the bottles, with special offers that seem very popular with those who come here regularly.
A recent special offer (one of many) has had the student population of Leeds beating a path to Oceana's door on a Thursday, when there's not only discounted entry but drinks are just 80p. And the newest addition to the student nights is Skint, where all drinks are £1.20.
The Last Word
It has to be said, this sprawling club is superb. It offers something that almost all other Leeds clubs don’t - variety. A great place to meet people due to the many venues within and you don’t have to be in a large group to have a good time. However, the vibe will not be to everyone’s taste, and those looking for an exclusive night-out may enjoy it less, but it's still worth a try.
