As a large group of family and friends we decided to use the seating upstairs in 'the loft'. The surroundings were excellent and the two young barmaids were friendly. However, some members of our group wished for a pint of black sheep bitter which for some reason is only served downstairs in the main bar? To our surprise when we commenced walking back upstairs, having bought the Black Sheep, we were confronted by who I assume was the landlady or manager? Whom spoke to us in a abrupt manner. She insisted that we could not take the drinks up the stairs. Health and Safety reasons maybe? But no signage! What are you supposed to do in these situations? Tell the group members in question to go drink downstairs? I don't think so! During this economic crisis when pubs are closing down at an alarming rate I would have thought looking after the customers needs was top of the agenda! As a result we drank up and took our custom elsewhere. Based on the fact we intended to stay in the pub all night I would suggest that they have lost some substantial takings. And most important lost a reputation.
Very poor service couldn't get to the bar for locals who wouldn't even move when I said "excuse me" We had a baby with us and asked is we could eat and the guy at the bar said yes either here or upstairs in the loft - we proceeded upstairs only to be greeted by a very rude land lady asking us where we were going. After explaining the obvious that we were going to eat she said no you cant not with a baby. So we explained we had been told that by the bar staff. She then proceeded to ask us " who told you that who told you that" then continued to question the bar staff. I did explain its ok we can eat downstairs and asked for a high chair - they didn't have one.
we left she was appallingly rude.
it says on their site "children welcomed when dining" think that maybe needs changing - it was 6pm apparently no children allowed after 6 - they need to make this clearer.
I also know someone else who has tried to book a party there when she arrived to discuss the details the land lady said she was too busy to speak to her - nice service.
service was very poor and food was not hot. Been to better back street boozers.
Somehow this place has won an award. My experience is of truly appalling service.
Was ignored at the bar for five minutes, not even an acknowledgement. Walked out and took my money elsewhere.
Went to the new 'Loft' last night (18.8.09) to eat. Nice setting; very disappointing food!
If the chef can't be bothered to make fresh chips on a quiet evening, then he should not let the waiter tell the customers that!
