Erm, can I just say that Leeds is possibly the best place to be on New Years Eve. If you can't find a party for New Years Eve in Leeds clubs that suits you then you're a tough audience. Love Leeds New Years Eve Special at Victoria Works is one party for New Years Eve in Leeds clubs which looks like it's going to sell out fast. With the likes of Kissdafunk and Hed Kandi it's no wonder all the early bird special tickets have gone. And if you manage to make it through till midnight and have the energy to keep going there's an after-party at Club Mission called In:Session which kicks off at 4am and goes on until midday.
Earlier on at Club Mission they're hosting a gay night called Homo Fairytale Ball which is, yes you guessed it, fancy-dress.
One of the main stumbling blocks to a good New Years Eve in Leeds clubs is pleasing everyone. My friends have varied music tastes and trying to find a venue playing music that's to everyone's liking is nigh on impossible. Or is it? Yes, thankfully, Brighton Beach is on at Leeds Town Hall, courtesy of The Cockpit. It's the usual eclectic mix of soul, Motown, Britpop and sixties classics. The Cockpit are also hosting their own New Years Eve with their regular club nights Garage and Slam Dunk. Or you could head over to the Leeds Academy where Pet Sounds are playing.
Another fantastic please-all event is up at the university, which sees the return of Wax:on. They've teamed up with Metropolis and are hosting some top names across Stylus, The Terrace, Mine and Pulse. With the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Shy FX, Plump DJs, People Get Real, Erol Alkan and Caspa tickets are going to sell out fast even though they're on the pricey side.
If you're a hardcore rock fan you should head to Rios which has Rock of Ages playing. Another live music gig to see in the New Year is being hosted at the Irish Centre with Celtic folk act The Nicky James Band.
As I said, there's something for everyone and every music taste, and if you fancy a more laidback experience of New Years Eve in Leeds clubs you could head to Hifi which has East Park Reggae Collective playing.
But, if you just can't face a hardcore New Years Eve in Leeds clubs, or the hangover (made worse by the fact you wake up and realise it's January), then Jongleurs is the place to be. Instead of sobbing into a glass of warm Champagne come midnight, the comedians at Jongleurs will ensure you'll be laughing as you toast the end of 2008. And what better way to end the year?
