The ViewLeeds Review
If you're out in Leeds on a Saturday night then this is the place to go. It’s always popular, and with a good range of music it guarantees a great night out.
The Venue
Halo is a renovated former church right in the centre of Leeds, just up the road from all the main bars. Plenty of taxis wait just outside and bus services that run through the night are close by. Entry fee is £7 on a Friday and Saturday night (£5 with a student card), which is reasonable and standard across Leeds.
Inside, the club is smart and modern, and the old church features give it a great vibe. The original stained-glass windows, beams, wall features and high ceilings are still in place, which really set it apart from all the other clubs. Also, the DJ on the main floor is high up where the organ once was.
The club is dark with UV lights spotted around the bar. It was recently carpeted so you won’t find yourself sticking to the floor. Its five bars are set in different areas so it’s always easy to get a drink, and shot girls walk through the crowds dishing out instant hits.
If you’re not too confident about your moves, there are plenty of pews set away from the dancefloors, giving you space to talk to your friends. There's an outdoor seated smoking area through the back room. Upstairs there's a VIP room which is large, and one of the VIP floors has a huge bean bag that has to be seen!
Halo is a large club which caters to all tastes. It's lively and very busy at the weekends, which does add to the atmosphere but early arrival is essential for a good night.
If you want to start your night early or get a drink in between lectures, there is a lounge bar next to Halo called Quilted Llama. This bar has a daily food menu, pool tables, plasma screens, PS3 and Wi-Fi for that chilled-out experience.
The People
Halo has a great vibe and attracts a varied bunch, but it's mainly students from across Leeds. However, the brand of students who come here are trendy, polished and well presented. You may find the odd fancydress outfit but most clubbers really make an effort here. Just a warning – no trainers.
The attitude of the bar staff and, surprisingly, the bouncers, is friendly and helpful, and makes your evening much more enjoyable. There are bouncers at the gate and entrance door so make sure you remember your ID to ensure your night is brilliant from start to finish. This club has a fun-loving, upmarket atmosphere and is a great place to meet new people and celebrate the weekend.
The Music
Halo plays a variety of music, but generally R'n'B and hip-hop is in the back room, and dance, chart, electro on the main floor. In the week there's a student night called ‘Bling’ Friday which mainly plays R'n'B music and has had a number of guests; recently, Taio Cruz and Wiley.
The Food and Drink
For a Saturday night, Halo has some of the best drink offers going. Typically most drinks start from only £1.50. Vodka mixer is £2.50, a pint of lager is £2, a bottle of wine is £9, or a shot is £1.50.
Although the alcoholic drinks are reasonable, and offer a large variety with different offers for various drinks, on some bars they only serve bottled drinks, which can be a lot more expensive.
If you are chilling out in the Quilted Llama during the day, they also have some great drink offers. For example, a pint of lager is £1.35, bottled alcopops are £1.35 or you can get a burger and a pint for £3!They've just introduced a new menu with delights such as chicken and ham pie for £2.99.
The Last Word
This is one of the most popular and busiest clubs in Leeds. Get there early as the queues get very long, very quickly which can spoil the mood. However, its lively atmosphere, great music and fun people ensures you'll have a night to remember.
