The ViewLeeds Review
A trendy, comfortable bar located in the bustling student town of Headingley. The Box appears to have it all.
The Venue
Situated on Otley Road in Headingley, The Box is in the prime location along the popular Otley Run, a strenuous endeavor undertaken by many (mainly students) in the Leeds area. It's part of the chain which also owns the Arc in Headingley. It provides a bit more than the rest of the bars in the locality, though, in that it has just that little bit more class and provides a trendy place to enjoy a few drinks with friends. The decor is retro yet edgy and there's both an upstairs and downstairs bar both with ample seating space, pool tables upstairs and plasma screens throughout.
An impressive feature to note is the very comfortable upstairs smoking area which is equipped with heat lamps and plasma screens. These little touches make for a much more pleasurable intake of nicotine than most bars provide since the 2007 smoking ban.
The People
No matter what day or time, the Box is always busy with young, vibrant customers. Most of the crowd come here for its Sky Sports, Hollyoaks and Big Brother screenings (to name a few) which bring home comforts to a social setting. It's mainly students who come here attracted by the meal deals and swanky surroundings.
The Food and Drink
On offer is a typical menu of pub food including burgers and pizzas which are quite reasonably priced at £5.50 for an extra large one. Meal deals are also on offer catering for the economically challenged student population with quite good quality main meals and a drink from Monday to Friday between noon and 5pm.
Unlike the food the drink is a little more expensive and not as competitive as other bars in the area. However if you like wine then you shouldn’t feel the pinch too much with a bottle of house red, white or rose at just £6.95 Monday to Thursday.
The Last Word
It is a common misconception that drinking in Headingley should be cheap due to the apparently less affluent local population. Unfortunately the Box doesn’t fit this theory. However if you want a little more from a bar than just a seat and a drink the Box is the place to be and it outshines its rivals second to none.
