Baby Jupiter looks to the past for its musical inspiration and when you hear the venue's playlist you’ll realise that’s a good thing.

The Venue
Hidden in the grey financial district of Leeds Baby Jupiter is not exactly a place you expect people in suits to hang out. This small basement bunker is straight out of the 70s.

The decor is spectacular. Make your way downstairs and enter the first small room where a striking leather and velvet wall bench decked out in purple, orange, black and gold calls you to sit on it and adopt the most chilled position you can imagine.

Take your time and check out the cult posters of Barbarella and Planets Of The Apes and you'll notice that the place is covered in retro wallpaper (even on the bathroom ceiling). The colour scheme is dominated by purple and orange. In the back room vintage pieces and a mishmash of old wooden and new but retro inspired chairs create a comfortable worn-in look.

The People
The tone of Baby Jupiter is set by the poster of the Jimi Hendrix Experience album Axis: Bold As Love which shows Hendrix as Durga, the multi-armed Hindu god (don’t go mad looking for it, it’s in the toilet). Chill out, put your feet on the table and soak in the funk of the 60s and 70s soundtrack.

But who will you find there? Forget the stereotype of afro wigs and frilly shirts. This is not the cheese fest of other venues inspired by the era. Baby Jupiter attracts people who know their tunes and as the soundtrack can range from funk and soul to ska and punk it is a retro-lovers stronghold. Expect to see the odd vintage outfit and casual young professionals in their late 20s and 30s.

The Drink
You are supposed to chill and relax at Baby Jupiter. The easiest method is to slowly sip a chilled beer. Baby Jupiter offers a really good variety to enjoy while taking you around the world. The Spanish Mahou, the Peruvian Cusquena, Kirin Ichiban from Japan, Quilmes, Beer Lao, Zatec, Vedett, Sierra Nevada, Baltica, Maredous (£2.60 to £3.30). And if wine is your poison then you can rely on a few house bottles cheaply priced at £11.50 or £3 and £4 for small and large glasses.

The Last Word
One of the liveliest music bars in Leeds makes Baby Jupiter a refreshing break from the norm.
