Just had dinner at Thornill Arms in Calverly and it was very pleasant. We were looking around for a pub as we just couldnt be bothered cooking and the pub does traditional honest pub grub at reasonable prices so we thought we would give it a try. We were not disappointed and came away with full bellys and happy. The food is traditional food, not fancy, what you order is what you get which is great as I sometimes think pubs take things too far with their flamboyant menus. We will be returning again soon!

i would like to give all the staff at the thornhill arms a very big thankyou for their quality of service and food ,plus the fine wine and beers which were on offer.it cant of been easy feeding over twenty five people all in one group , but you put on a great meal for all of us and sent us home more than satisfied with the kind hospitality.

Copy of letter to be sent to the landlady today .........

I am writing to say how appalled and disgusted at the way myself, my husband and my dog were treated in the Thornill Arms last night.

After 10 years of frequenting the Thornhill, we are suddenly turned away for bring in our small, elderly dog who has come to the pub most weeks for the entire time that we have been. Many years before you arrived I might add.

We were treated as if we had “called in while passing” and not as regular visitors, which you are well aware of. Your reason for asking us to leave was that “dogs are not allowed for food hygiene reasons”. Having done some research on this, I can make the following quote "There is no law stating that dogs cannot be in a pub or indeed for that matter a restaurant. It is up to the management and their discretion." Food Standard Agency.

I accept the fact that some pubs are unhappy to allow dogs in and make this clear by whatever means necessary. However, you know that our dog is no bother to anyone (in fact most people have not even known she was there) to just have a change of heart about this with no apparent reason is deceitful and underhand. Clearly, you have had a change of mind about our visiting the pub, but do not have the guts or the decency to be truthful about your actions. Instead you quote a law to us that does not exist, and try to pass the pub off as a restaurant/bistro. You appear to be extending your eating area to downstairs as well as up now, and so I assume that it is your intention to concentrate on the dining service that you provide and discourage pub regulars. You are successful in this in so much that you have lost custom both from us and many others that we know who visit the Thornhill on a regular basis. These people are as astounded as we are at what happened last night and, in the current climate whereby pubs are closing everyday due to poor attendance etc, we all find it unbelievable that you have chosen to h

I am a frequent visitor to the Thornhill and enjoy the food as being the best in the area.

Its a fair point that dogs should not be allowed around food - other customers don't know how clean they are and you can't predict whether they'll wander to tables etc - so the knee jerk reaction of putting a bad review on the website is quite petty to say the least-

I'm not sure how put out you would be by tying your dog up outside like everyone else does in many a pub around the area.

As you quoted in the law - the management has discretion - and using this is their prerogative as they are dealing with the whole customer base - not just one party.

In response to not wanting regulars in the pub - there are a whole host of regular clientele that frequent the Thornhill who are warm, welcoming, and good for a conversation.

So I would conclude in response to the above that to maintain a good quality food & drink environment the management have the obligation to do what is best for the customers as a whole, and not bend over backwards for a small number who seem intent on causing trouble for no reason.

For anyone reading my review I invite you to go down to the Thornhill and try it out for yourselves - you will be pleasantly surprised. - Report

As a long standing Calverley local, may I comment on the two post,With reference to the first post.

This just sums up the Thornhill Arms, It has gone from a buZZing local public house to a sleepy residential home.

On calling in for a drink a couple of Fridays ago (the first time in a year or so) I was surprised to say the least that there were 3 people drinking at the bar!

When Deric, Lynn, Janet and there great staff were in residence this would have been 30 to 40 if not more with a first class atmosphere.

With reference to the second post. This is as far from the truth as one can get! WHAT locals most are in the New Inn or the Calverley Arms!

"alegadley" this may be why the Thornhill Arms is for sale. Also this post sums up the sort of management in the Thornhill Arms who I think posted this reply. - Report
