The ViewLeeds Review
The train to Manchester will be delayed until further notice. That's an annoying phrase. But it needn't be when you've got a place like the White Rose in the train station. Here you can sit down with a pint and wait for the signal failures to be sorted out.
The Venue
This small pub is nestled inside the Leeds train station. It's a cosy, warm retreat for when the train's late. It's carpeted and there are a few armchairs, pub style tables and chairs and plenty of space around the bar. One screen shows sports and the news while the other tells you when the next trains are departing, just in case those problems on the line get sorted earlier than expected.
The People
The place is friendly and it's easy to strike up conversation with a fellow traveller who's waiting for the same train. Virtually all the customers are waiting for one and the vast majority of them are regular commuters in their late thirties and forties. Who knows you may even make some friends here. Everyone pays attention to the screen with the departures but nobody seems to be in a rush. This place is urging you to forget the train and have another.
The Food and Drink
If your train is delayed so long that you start to get hungry the White Rose provides a quick and easy way to put your stomach at rest. They serve breakfasts priced from £3 to £6 and a selection of mains priced between £6 and £7 including haddock and chips, three bean chilli, chicken tikka masala and London Pride beef pie. For something lighter they serve pizzas (£5.50 to £6), sandwiches (£4 to £4.50) and a burger and pint deal for £5.
The food may not be top notch but it'll fill you up.
Most people opt for beer and there's Grolsch, Worthingtons, Marston Pedigree, Tetleys, Carlsberg and others. As if to stress that the kind folks of White Rose would love to have you there for longer, they offer four selected pints for only £8. Alternatively you can choose from a dozen wines, rather cheap at £11 to 14.50 a bottle.
The Last Word
The train for Manchester is now ready to depart. Please board the train. Who cares about the train anymore? The White Rose is so cosy that getting home isn't so important now.
