Very pleasant, country public house with welcoming, friendly & helpful staff.
We had a fillet (rare) & a baby T-bone (Med-Rare), with sides of onion rings, chips, vegetables, salad.
The meat was tougher than usual & not as tasty as other steak houses. Onion rings were 90% batter & the chips were over-sized & very greasy. They may have been deep fried a little too long. Salad & vegetables were as expected.
The price for the meal was more than most steak house restaurants.
To summarise, we felt it was over priced & poor quality. The pub itself was a very pleasant experience though.

I have eaten at the Rythre Arms boy and man... From fillet to T bone! And not once have I had a bad experience. The staff are always very welcoming and helpful, the atmosphere is warm and cosy, sat in the lovely middle room with the fire burning. The selection of wines, beers and spirits are outstanding for a small country restaurant. The desserts to die for! I would challenge anyone to find a better family run restaurant like it! ill be eating there tonight again, think ill try the Giant T-Bone! see you soon T, L and B!

Me and husband ate here last night which was a bit of a surprise for a his Birthday. Having past this quaint pub/restaurant on the motorbikes a hundered times, I thought it was time we would see what all the fuss was about! I tried to book on the website but when it didn't refresh I thought I would e-mail to see if I could get a booking for the same evening. I was really surprised when Tony e-mailed back saying there was and they could even decorate the table to make it a little bit special. We arrived early as a pub we were going to stop at is now shut down but we were made to feel very welcome by Tony and soon our order was taken and we were whisked away to our table to start on the bread basket. The menu was extensive and showed a passion for quality beef. My husband particularly enjoyed reading about how the beef is prepared before deciding on the Sirloin. The food was absolutely stunning! The steaks were huge and vegetables were cooked perfectly for us - not over done and still which some crunch. The roast potatoes were to die for and the mushrooms were a lovely touch. Overall, a fantastic meal at a reasonable price. Quality does not come cheap but the difference is worth it anytime. We will definately go back again before the year is out but this time I'll remember to book further in advance - I think I was very lucky yesterday!

Just arrived home from our first visit to the Rythre Arms. Our party of eight thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The food was excellent, the staff really friendly and the service faultless. The Rythre came highly recommended and it did not disappoint us.

The ambiance and tranquility of the Ryther Arms is a winner from the moment you walk through the door. We were made to feel welcome on our arrival and were shown to our table promptly. I do feel, however, that the speed of service (too fast) lets the Ryther Arms down. My wife and I dined at the Ryther Arms having constantly heard from friends and family about how excellent both the food and service is. We felt rushed throughout our dining experience, having our mains served to us about 3 minutes after finishing the starters and then having our bill brought once we said we didn't fancy a pudding (we may of wanted further drinks?).

That said, the food was exquisite. The wife had soup of the day which was Butternut Squash and Chilli, follow by the 6oz fillet. Both of which she really enjoyed. I went for the deep-fried brie, then the 6oz fillet and King Scallops. Having never had Scallops of any size before I was not sure what to expect but what I got was vice nice (although they were that big after eating three I had to battle to eat the last two)!

Overall, the quality of the food won the day and I am sure that we shall be returning to the Ryther Arms to try something else on their grand menu. Maybe with parents and in-laws who we know would love the food (and portion sizes)!

I simply cannot believe Vince is not a landlord of a pub or friend of a landlord trying to compete with this little diamond of a place! My wife (vicky) and I (tony Laird) decided to pay our first visit here on Friday 11th June 2010 and what a fabulous choice of venue we selected! Having rang to book on Wednesday, it seemed unlikely that we would be able to be squeezed in as the restaurant, but we accepted a 9pm sitting. We turned up slightly early at 8.10pm and had decided to get a drink prior to our meal. We let the staff know that we had arrived and within 5mins we were invited through to our table. Having eaten steak across Europe, Mexico and in the usa I eventually decided to go for the 20oz Fillet Steak and wasn't disappointed - This was one of the best steaks I've ever had! Even compared to Argentinian steak. My wife chose the 8oz sirloin with 2 x giant king prawns and was delighted with her choice, said she'd never seen prawns like it! We let our main settle and then eventually gave in to temptation and went for a sweet. I got the Jam Roly Poly and custard and Vicky got the cheesecake. Omg! Rythre Arms does not believe in small portions! The staff our so friendly and at the end of the evening we had a natter with a lovely lady who was the landlady's mum. Overall this was a superb evening, superb food, warm cosy atmosphere and a wide choice of wine - unfortunately I was driving though ;-(we'll be back! Vince obviously doesn't appreciate the good things in life!

Disappointed, what I found was a small, dark, dingy little pub, serving up reasonable food at extraordinary prices; Bland vegetables with no sauce and hardly any seasoning – I DON’T eat out for boiled veg!! Which seems to come with EVERYTHING!! The steak I had was nice but I would have expected the whole meal to truly wonderful when it cost me nearly twenty pounds for a main course!!! My partners was the same a few pieces of chicken and a packet sauce and yes MORE steamed VEG!! and nearly twenty pounds again. I was expecting fantastic for the money and got average instead, what can I say. The service was disjointed drinks were wrong and took a long time, then when our glasses were empty the waitress and I think the owner maybe just kept walking past us without even asking or looking at us so we could ask them for more. Maybe we were unlucky or it was a bad night but when I pay nearly £20 for a main course I expect excellence, NOT AVERAGE.

We went along on thursday night (15th april) myself and my wife and took along 2 friends who had not eaten here before. Needless to say the food was excellent, service tip top again! Our friends will definitely be back time and time again - if theY can get in! I talked myself out of Having the rib eye and went for medium T-bone which was Amazing, Everything cooked perfect and Piping hot! What more could I ask for. All left very happy and very full! Once again keep up the fantastic work guysxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Vince 100---- I am sorry but I must completely disagree with your comments! I have eaten here probably 3 times a year for the last 7or 8 years! If the steak only rated 6/10 can you please tell me where I can get a 10/10 as I had the rib-eye approx 3 weeks ago and it was amazing! As for it being dated, the pub/restaurant I think is in keeping with its history and its location, if u want a clean crisp modern place then go into a city center for some pre -pack crap! As for your steaks not being 'cooked right' if it was dealt with, what was the problem? Also £190 for 4 people, 3 couses with wine is not expensive, again why not try wetherspoons! I know I am ranting a little but Ryther Arms means alot to me and alot for other people, that is why u have to book for a sat night and normally through week! Xxx top venue, keep up the great food and service! Xxx

The reputation seemed high so we travelled one half hours for the first sitting 7-9pm. First impressions were just ok , it is a pub so expected it to be pub like which it was but the restuarant areas are very dated , tired and layed out with cheap mats and paper table cloths / napkins , it is stuck in the eighties , and far too cramped , private conversations are out of the question.

We asked for a wine list at the table it never arrived we had to go find a waiter 15 mins after been seated just to order the wine. We were served by 5 different peolple in all and the overall attentiveness was poor. The starters were good and ok valuewhen the mains came two out of the four steaks were cooked quite wrong , so had to go back , they did this for us no problems though and when the new steaks came they were cooked exactly right. I had the ribeye and have to say the taste was about 6/10 , I have tasted nicer most times at decent restuarants throughout leeds and ilkley for lees cost too. We had desserts which were ok too nothing special. The bill for four people was nearly £190 which was high for the overall experience.

To conclude , if quantity is more important than quality and you dont mind feeling cramped in to somebodys time warped 1980's style front room with poor service from pretty lacklustre waitresses who plonk your food down and say " tar love " then this would be the place for you , dining with etiquette it isnt!

I wish I'd seen this sooner, thanks for the positives above though.

The reputation IS good, the restaurant is clean and not long since decorated (obviously not to your taste). The mats aren't cheap and the paper works well (we don't have space to keep the amount of linen required for how busy we are, which you forgot to mention!) If you want a private conversation then go to a quiet restaurant, in Ilkley.

We were busy, I apologised for the late arrival of the wine list and made sure you did not wait for anything else for the rest of your evening. We made right the steaks you sent back and made sure they were to your satisfaction and served you some more wine and desserts.

£190 is quite a high bill for a table of 4 in our restaurant although you can easily spend more or much less, I don't doubt you saw the prices on the menu as you ordered.

To conclude, we are famous for serving quality (definitely not surpassed anywhere in Ilkley Vince) and quantity in a warm and comfortable environment. The waiting staff are local people that treat guests as friends not just names. Waiting 15 minutes for a wine list is not good but hardly to be considered as bad service in a "pub"

"Etiquette tells one which fork to use. Manners tells one what to do when your neighbor doesn't"

I'm not sure you have a grasp of either.

I look forward to eating in Ilkley soon.

My husband and I have been going to the Ryther for over 20 years now and to this day the service and food has'nt changed. My husband has a big
appetite so the extra servings you can get at no extra cost are great any where else you would have to pay extra I am sure.

If you want to dine out eat very little but pay a lot of money the Ryther is'nt for you if you want plenty of nice food for a reasonable price I would recommend it,but always book in advance.

And thanks to Tony,Lisa and Barbara for always making us feel special

Quite easily the best steak I've ever had. 16oz. Ribeye cooked perfectly with 5 fresh vegetables included. Old Mill cask bitter was on form too. The only negative was the £35 taxi back to Leeds. The crazy thing is, it's still worth it to get out of plastic sterile foods available closer to home. I'm going again next week and cannot wait!

I cannot recommend Ryther Arms highly enough. It is set in a lovely village off the beaten track in an old-style pub. The food is to die for. Starters are a mix of the traditional and different. Excellent portions and a good range also.

Main courses are obviously based around a fantastic choice of steaks. Every time I have been to Ryther Arms, my steaks have been cooked exactly as I requested (i can personally recommend the fillet steak which, if cooked lightly, cuts like butter!) The T Bones and Rib Eye steaks are lovely and tasty although the fat on/in them is not always to everyone's taste but surely that is why there is a choice of steaks? My wife is not a great steak eater but she is always well catered for with normally at least two very different fish dishes as well as chicken, lamb and pork all done in different ways. But the thing that sets Ryther Arms apart is that the steaks don't just come with chips, peas and salad. Instead you can get a good mix of vegetables and a choice of either boiled or roast potatoes. They will even re-stock your vegetables if you run out. Oh, and they do some beautiful sauces to go with the steaks - the stilton is my personal favourite!

Finally the desserts are lovely and wholesome ranging from the usual suspects (ice cream, fruit pies etc.) through to home-made specials. To be honest I always struggle to finish off my dessert if I've had a starter and steak main course, such is the size of the portions! Overall, you will need to travel a long way to find a better steak house - even my family in Kent always suggest going for a meal here when they are visiting me in York. I think that is praise enough for a great restaurant.

we have used this restaurant numerous times over the last 10 years and tonight was one of those occasions.we had a reservation for 7.30pm and where seated promptly in the middle bar in the corner (it was quite cosy). My husband ordered the prawn cocktail starter and the battered mushrooms for myself. The portion sizes where a little on the small size and not what we had come to expect from the ryther arms, the dishes though did taste OK (just OK nothing special), for mains my husband ordered the rib-eye steak(the smaller of the 2 sizes) which he says was cooked perfectly to his requirements and tasted delicious but then again its a steak house and we would have been surprised if it had been a bad steak!! I ordered the salmon wellington only to be told it was no longer available this evening and was offered the substitue of a beef wellington. I had already explained to the waiter that i Had an allergy to beef/pork/chicken and lamb so was not overly happy about his choice of substitute dish in the end i plumped for the mushroom stroganoff special and to be totally honest it was nothing special ,if anything it was unpalatable. The ryther arms used to have a very good vegetarian choice on the menu and now i think that has fallen by the wayside to the detriment of the restaurant. We wont be going back even though the ambiance and the wine /ale choice is good.

My family have been going to the Ryther Arms for years, myself and my better half come here quite often now, the money doesn't bother us... you pay for quality, and quality is absolutely what you get here.

I have NEVER had a bad meal here in at least 20 years!

I have tried many things on the menu, but always go back to the Steaks, we come from Doncaster everytime, and the run doesn't bother us because we know we will always receive a warm welcome and enjoy fantastic food. Going back on Saturday for a special occasion, can't wait.

Hopefully Barbara's wrist is better too, see you all soon

This place is awesome! I brought my wife all the way from the USA to eat here.

The food was simply delicious, the portions were massive! - Absolutely love the nostalgic old English atmosphere, the low ceilings, the wooden beams, the old fireplace - love it!

Can't wait to come back. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Have never been to a restaurant anywhere where the steak even comes close to what you get at the Ryther Arms !

The years of experience the owners have in the hospitality trade just oozes out of the whole experience, from the wonderful staff, many of who have worked there for years and make you feel like one of the family, to the obvious quality and standard of the food.

Wonderful steaks, lovely people, lovely place, what more can i say !

What a disappointment the steak was over cooked and dry / tasteless same as you would get if it were the vegetables that came with it were horrible and sliced new potatoes talk about cutting corners and penny pinching then the bill came which was wrong!!

The waiter and waitress were very rude and i think they expected me and my elderly mother to actually like this over cooked and over priced rubbish we were presented with as they were both very put out when we pointed out what a wasted trip we had,

they didn't offer to reconcile any over our issues and instead persisted in being rude, and very unpleasant.

So thinking about the Ryther Arms ..... think again!!!!!

After speaking with all the waiting staff and the management, not one of them received one complaint in the weeks! prior to your comments.

We would always offer to replace a steak if it was not to your liking and if still not satisfied we would not have charged at all.

We are regular visitors to the Ryther Arms. The steaks are the best we have ever eaten and we dont think you would find one as tender and well cooked as here.

It isnt a cheap meal but we always leave extremely happy. We just wish they had more eating times rather than just 7pm & 9pm.

9pm is too late for us so if you want to go at 7pm you have to book well in advance.

However, we would recommend this restuarant to anyone how enjoys steak.

We called in on a Saturday night about 6.30pm on the off chance we could have a meal without having booked, they were very busy with bookings and we were told they do 2 sittings 7 &9pm but still managed to get us a table, menu was excellent,

I could have had every dish which made it difficult to choose. My husband had the extra matured rib eye steak which he said was delicious, best steak he has ever had (and let me say, he has had a few!!)

I had gammon which was very thick and huge! We had lovely fresh veg, roast potatoes, tomato & mushrooms, everything including the service was excellent, The staff were very happy & helpful, we will be going back on regular occasions i think to try everything else on the menu!
